30 Days of Truth.. Day 12 → Something you never get compliments on.

This is a hard one. (No comments from the peanut gallery!)

When I was younger, many exchange students called me “mom.” I’ve lost count to how many of them.. but there are times when I remember the special ones that shared my home, for their US visits.. and I think about how their view, of the world, was different than anything I could imagine.

One of my Japanese students, wrote, in her first letter, before we met her, “My mother has a thankless job.” I thought about that for a good long while. Whatever word, they use, in Japanese, converts to “thankless” in English.

Motherhood really is a thankless job. Its full of everyday things that can’t possibly all be complimented.

You never hear, “Thanks for cleaning the toilet, mom.” or “Thanks for washing out our trash can, mom.” but in my home I am blessed with “thank you’s” for meals I prepare and for taking them out for something special. They do appreciate me and the things they don’t even know that I do. You know those things that only I would do. No one else sees some of those chores.. they just get done when Mom does them.

So I don’t think there is anything I’m never complimented on. Life is how you see it. I don’t think a lot of things deserve a compliment. People show appreciation in ways that are silent compliments. I appreciate those types of compliments.
